Introduction: Your ACT Date Is Your Starting Line
Every ACT test date is a deadline working backward. The date you choose determines when you must register, how long you have to prepare, whether your score reaches colleges before their application deadlines, and how many retakes you have available before you run out of time.
The ACT is offered 7 times a year in the United States and 5–7 times internationally. Each date has three associated deadlines of its own. Miss any one of them and you face extra fees, limited centre choices, or the need to jump to the next date — sometimes months later.
This guide gives you the complete 2025–2026 and 2026–2027 ACT test date calendars, score release dates, the month-by-month strategy for choosing the right date, and everything students in both the US and India need to register with confidence.

4. International ACT Test Dates 2025–2026 (India & Global)
International test dates apply to ALL students testing outside the US, US territories, and Puerto Rico — including students in India, UK, UAE, Singapore, and all other countries. International tests are typically administered across two days (Friday–Saturday).

5. ACT Test Dates 2026–2027: Planning Ahead
Plan your full junior and senior year testing sequence using the 2026–2027 confirmed and projected dates. Registration for these dates opens in mid-2026.

Dates marked are confirmed or strongly anticipated based on ACT's published patterns. Always verify at act.org before registering. Registration for 2026–27 dates is not yet open as of April 2026.
6. The Three Deadlines You Must Know for Each Test Date
Every ACT test date has three deadlines. Missing any one of them has cost consequences. Here is what each means:
Deadline | When It Falls | What You Can Do | Fee Consequence |
Regular Registration Deadline | ~5 weeks before test date | Register at standard fee; choose any available test centre; no extra charges | No additional fee — base fee only |
Late Registration Deadline | ~2 weeks before test date | Still register — but with a $40 late fee added; test centre availability is significantly reduced by this point | Base fee + $40 late surcharge |
Standby Testing (after all deadlines) | After late registration closes | Request standby testing — $72 extra; show up on test day hoping for an available seat | Base fee + $72 standby fee; seat NOT guaranteed |
Photo Upload Deadline | Same as late registration deadline (current ACT policy) | Upload your compliant photo — without it, you will not be admitted on test day | No fee, but failure to upload = admission denied |
⚠️ Photo Upload and Late Registration share the same deadline. If you registered early but forgot to upload your photo by the late deadline, you will be denied admission on test day. Upload your photo immediately after completing registration — do not wait.
7. Month-by-Month Strategy: When to Take the ACT
Each ACT test month has a distinct strategic profile. Here is what each date offers and who benefits most from it:
SEPTEMBER (Sep 13, 2025) → Fall opener. Best for seniors who need an early retake before October ED applications. Highly popular — register 6+ weeks early. My Answer Key (TIR) NOT available in September.
OCTOBER (Oct 25, 2025) → My Answer Key available — strongly recommended if you plan to retake, as you receive your actual test questions. Scores release before December. Great for seniors targeting January RD deadlines.
DECEMBER (Dec 13, 2025) → Final fall national date. Scores release before most January RD deadlines. Juniors can use December as a first attempt with built-in buffer for spring retakes. My Answer Key NOT available.
FEBRUARY (Feb 14, 2026) → Earliest spring date. Ideal first attempt for juniors who want maximum retake flexibility. Science now optional (Enhanced ACT). Quieter sitting — test centres have good availability.
APRIL (Apr 11, 2026) → MOST RECOMMENDED first attempt for juniors. By April, students have covered most high school curriculum tested on ACT. My Answer Key available — use it for summer preparation if you need a retake.
JUNE (Jun 13, 2026) → Popular retake after April. My Answer Key available. Good for juniors retaking with a full summer ahead. Scores release before August — perfect timing for senior year opener prep.
JULY (Jul 11, 2026) → Summer date; good for final retakes. NO centres in New York. Less popular — test centres have good availability nationally. My Answer Key NOT available. Scores before September.
My Answer Key (formerly Test Information Release) lets you see your actual test questions and answers after scoring. This is the single most powerful retake preparation resource available. It is ONLY offered for October, April, and June test dates. If you plan to retake, strongly consider choosing one of these three dates for your first attempt.
8. How to Choose the Right ACT Date for You
Factor | Question to Ask | How It Should Influence Your Date |
Your application deadline | When does my earliest university application close? | Work backward: need scores 3–4 weeks before deadline = test at least 4–5 weeks before that. Count back from each deadline. |
Preparation level | Have I studied for 3+ months and taken at least two full practice tests? | Don't book a date before you're ready. A low ACT score from rushing is harder to explain than a later score. |
Retake buffer | Do I have time for a retake if I don't hit my target? | Plan for 2 dates minimum. Pick your first date 2–3 months before your backup date to allow meaningful preparation between attempts. |
My Answer Key availability | Do I want detailed feedback on my mistakes to improve for a retake? | Choose October, April, or June for your first attempt if you plan to retake — these three dates offer My Answer Key. |
School/board exam conflicts | Do I have CBSE boards, IB exams, or major school exams during this month? | Avoid months where board prep and ACT prep compete directly — focus on one at a time. |
Test centre availability | Will my preferred city have seats at my preferred centre? | International students: register 6–8 weeks early. US metro students: 5–6 weeks early. Late registration = limited or no preferred centre. |
Which sections to include | Do I need Science and/or Writing for my target universities? | Decide before registering — adding/removing sections later costs change fees. Research your target colleges' ACT requirements first. |
The Two-Date Planning Framework
Date 1 (Primary attempt): Choose a date 3–4 months before your application deadline. This is your first real attempt with full preparation behind it.
Date 2 (Backup attempt): Choose a date 2–3 months after Date 1. This gives you time to analyse your My Answer Key results (if applicable) and work on specific weak areas.
Date 3 (Emergency): Optional — if Dates 1 and 2 don't reach your target, have a third date in mind. Must still fall before application deadlines with score release time built in.
9. Grade-by-Grade ACT Date Recommendations
Grade / Profile | Best ACT Date(s) | Strategy |
Grade 10 (Sophomore) | February or April — optional practice only | No pressure attempt; use score as diagnostic baseline for junior year planning. No college consequences. |
Grade 11 (Junior) — first attempt | April 11, 2026 (primary) or February 14, 2026 (earlier start) | April is the most popular and strategic first attempt — you have covered most of the curriculum. February gives a bonus retake opportunity. |
Grade 11 — targeting 30+ score | April 2026 (primary) + June 2026 or Sep 2026 (retake) | April with My Answer Key, then June retake after reviewing detailed feedback. Gives scores before senior year fall applications. |
Grade 12 (Senior) — Early Decision/Action | September 13 or October 25, 2025 | ED/EA deadlines are November 1–15; October test gives scores by ~Nov 7 — just in time. September is safer with more buffer. |
Grade 12 (Senior) — Regular Decision | October 2025 or December 2025 | December scores release before most January RD deadlines. October is better — gives buffer for a final retake if needed. |
Grade 12 (Senior) — retaking after Grade 11 | September or October 2025 — first available senior dates | Allow summer between Grade 11 result and Grade 12 retake. Use My Answer Key from June/April attempt to target weak areas. |
International (India) — first attempt | February 6–7 or April 10–11, 2026 | February and April have the strongest Indian test centre networks. Register 6–8 weeks before. Add Science ($4) — strongly recommended. |
Gap year / adult student | Any date; plan around your specific deadlines | No restrictions on when to test. August–October 2026 opens the next cycle if June/July 2026 is missed. |
10. Aligning Your ACT Date with College Application Deadlines
Application Type | Deadline | Latest ACT Date | Recommended ACT Date |
US Early Decision / Action | November 1–15 | October 25, 2025 (scores ~Nov 7) | September 13, 2025 — gives more score buffer and emergency retake option |
US Regular Decision (most schools) | January 1–15, 2026 | December 13, 2025 (scores ~Dec 27) | October 25, 2025 — allows December as backup |
UK UCAS | January 31, 2027 | December 12, 2026 (scores by ~Jan 2, 2027) | October or November 2026 |
Canada (most universities) | December–February | October–November 2026 | September or October 2026 |
Australia | October–December (rolling) | August–September 2026 | June or July 2026 |
India (SAT/ACT accepting) | June–August 2026 | April 10–11, 2026 (scores by ~May) | February or April 2026 |
Singapore NUS / NTU | March–April | December 2026 | September–October 2026 |
The 3-Week Safety Buffer: ACT scores take 2–4 weeks to release. After release, allow an additional 2–3 days for scores to process in the university's system. Plan for at least 3 weeks — ideally 4–5 weeks — between your ACT test date and your application submission deadline.
11. ACT Fees 2025–2026: Complete Breakdown
US STUDENT ACT FEE SCHEDULE 2025–2026
Fee Item | Amount | Notes |
Base ACT (English + Math + Reading) | $68 | Standard registration — Science now separate |
+ Science section | $68 + $4 = $72 | Highly recommended — adds Science composite; most colleges expect it |
+ Writing section | $68 + $25 = $93 | Optional essay; check if your target colleges require it |
+ Science + Writing (all sections) | $68 + $29 = $97 | Full test with both optional sections |
Late registration surcharge | +$40 | After regular deadline but before late deadline |
Standby testing fee | +$72 | After all deadlines; seat NOT guaranteed |
Test date change fee | $44 | Move to a different test date; original base fee credited |
Test centre change fee | $30 (before regular deadline) / $40 (after) | Change your test location |
My Answer Key | ~$26 | Receive your test questions and answers — only Oct, Apr, Jun dates |
Additional score report | $16 per report | Beyond the 4 free reports included at registration |
ACT does NOT refund cancellations | $0 refund | Use test date change instead of cancelling to preserve some fee value |
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ACT FEE SCHEDULE 2025–2026
Fee Item | USD Amount | India (INR approx.) | Notes |
ACT core (Eng + Math + Reading) | $186.50 | ~₹16,000 | Includes international surcharge |
+ Science | $186.50 + $4 = $190.50 | ~₹16,350 | Add Science to generate STEM composite |
+ Writing | $186.50 + $25 = $211.50 | ~₹18,150 | Writing optional — check college requirements |
+ Science + Writing | ~$221.50 | ~₹19,000 | All sections |
Late registration | +$40 | ~₹3,400 | Same surcharge as US students |
No refund policy | No refund | N/A | ACT fees are non-refundable — use Date Change (+$44) if plans change |
Compared to the SAT: The ACT international fee (~$186.50–$221.50) is significantly higher than the SAT ($111 for international students). This is a meaningful budget consideration. For budget-conscious students, the SAT is cheaper internationally — but if your profile is stronger on the ACT, the score advantage is worth the cost difference.
12. ACT Dates in India: Special Guidance
India-Specific Factor | Details | Action Required |
Test format in India | Paper-and-pencil at most Indian centres. Digital (Enhanced ACT) at very few centres — verify before registering. | Confirm your specific test centre's format during registration. Most Indian centres are paper. |
Two-day administration | International ACT runs Friday–Saturday. Morning and afternoon sessions may be offered. | Check which sessions your preferred centre offers for your date. Not all centres have both. |
Test centre fill-up speed | Major cities fill 4–6 weeks before each date. February and April fill fastest. | Register 6–8 weeks before your preferred date in any metro city. Register as soon as the window opens. |
Cities with ACT centres | Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, and others. | Search act.org for centres in your city during registration. If your city is full, expand to the nearest city. |
ID on exam day | Passport (universally accepted). Some centres accept school photo ID. Aadhaar: policy varies by centre. | Bring passport — it is the safest, most universally accepted ID at all Indian ACT centres. |
Admission ticket | Printed copy required. Digital version on phone NOT accepted. | Download from MyACT 1–2 weeks before test; print 2 copies. |
Science section | Optional from September 2025. Adding Science costs $4 extra. | Add Science — virtually all US universities expect it and STEM composite is generated from it. |
Fee payment | USD via international credit/debit card or PayPal. No EMI. | Ensure card supports international USD transactions before starting registration. |
Deadline timezone | 11:59 PM US Central Time (CT) — NOT Indian time. | 11:59 PM CT = 11:29 AM IST the next day. Set phone reminders. |
ACT vs SAT for India | ACT international fee (~$187–$221) is ~$75–$110 higher than SAT. But some students score better on ACT. | Take a diagnostic test for both; choose the exam where you score higher, not simply the cheaper one. |
India Priority Dates: February (Feb 6–7) and April (Apr 10–11) are the most accessible international dates with strong Indian test centre availability. For seniors applying in fall: September (Sep 5–6) and October (Oct 23–24) are the critical dates. Register for any of these as soon as registration opens.
13. How to Register for Your ACT Date — Step-by-Step
ACT registration is entirely online at act.org. The process takes 30–45 minutes for international students. Have everything ready before starting.
Create Your MyACT Account
Go to act.org and click 'Sign In → Create Account.' Enter your full legal name (exactly as on your ID), date of birth, and a personal email you will keep for years. Verify your email immediately.
Complete Your Student Profile
Enter your high school name, graduation year, GPA, and mailing address. For international students, enter your country address — this drives your test centre search radius.
Select Your Test Date and Sections
Choose your date from the available calendar. Decide: Core ($68) / +Science ($4) / +Writing ($25). For most students: add Science, skip Writing unless your colleges require it. Select before proceeding — changing sections later costs fees.
Choose Your Test Centre
Search by city or ZIP code. For international students: search by country and city. Have your top 2–3 centre choices ready in advance — popular centres sell out mid-registration. Select and confirm.
Upload Your Photo
Submit a clear headshot: face and shoulders, plain background, no filters, no glasses, no hat. Format: JPEG, PNG, or GIF. Max 4 MB. This appears on your admission ticket and is verified on test day. Upload IMMEDIATELY after registration — same deadline as late registration.
Pay Your Fee
US: $68–$97. International: $186.50–$221.50. Accepted: Visa, Mastercard, AmEx, PayPal. Full payment in one transaction — no EMI. Save your confirmation email and screenshot your receipt.
Download Your Admission Ticket
Available 1–2 weeks before your test date in your MyACT account. Print on white paper — phone display NOT accepted. Bring it with a valid photo ID. Check: correct name, date, test centre address.
14. What Happens If You Miss a Deadline
Situation | Option | Cost | Best Action |
Missed regular deadline — late window still open | Register with late fee | +$40 surcharge | Register immediately — test centre availability drops sharply after the regular deadline |
Missed both regular AND late deadlines | Standby testing (paper only) | +$72; seat NOT guaranteed | Only if you're willing to risk showing up and potentially being turned away |
Missed all deadlines including standby | Wait for next ACT date | Full fee for new date | Register for the next date immediately; map it against your application deadlines |
Already registered, can't attend your date | Use Test Date Change (+$44) | $44 change fee; original base fee credited toward new date | Much better than forfeiting entire fee — change, don't cancel |
No-showed without cancelling | Zero refund — full fee lost | $0 recovered | Next time: cancel or change before the deadline |
✅ The Next ACT Date Is Always Nearby: ACT is offered 7 times per year. Even if you miss one cycle completely, the next date is typically only 4–6 weeks away. Missing one date is stressful but not catastrophic — as long as the next date still falls before your application deadline.
15. Changing or Cancelling Your ACT Date
Action | Allowed? | Fee | Deadline | How |
Change test DATE | YES | $44 change fee; original base fee credited | By regular deadline for the new date | Log in → MyACT → 'Make Changes to Your Registration' → new date |
Change test CENTRE | YES | $30 before regular deadline; $40 after | Before late registration deadline | Same MyACT process — select different centre |
Add/remove Writing | YES | No fee before reg deadline; fees apply after | Before late deadline | MyACT → modify section selections |
Add/remove Science | YES | $4 for Science; refund if removing | Before late deadline | MyACT → modify sections |
Cancel registration | NO REFUND | Entire fee forfeited | N/A | Use Test Date Change instead — preserves base fee value toward new date |
Breakng test booklet seal then changing | NOT ALLOWED | Must re-register and pay full fee | N/A | Once you open the booklet, you CANNOT request a date change even if you stop mid-test |
⚠️ No Refunds, Ever: ACT registration fees are completely non-refundable under standard circumstances. If you can't attend your test, always use Test Date Change (+$44) rather than outright cancellation — you recover the base fee toward your new date. Simply not showing up means the entire fee is gone with no recovery path.
16. ACT School Day Testing — Free Option for Many Students
Many US states administer the ACT during the school day, often at no cost to students. This is the same official, scored ACT as the national Saturday tests — colleges accept school day scores identically.
Element | Details |
What it is | Official ACT administered at your school during a regular school day — same scored test as Saturday national dates |
Cost | Often FREE — many states and districts cover the entire exam fee |
Availability | 21+ US states currently provide this to some or all public school juniors. Check your state's department of education. |
Timing | Typically offered late February through mid-April. Your school or district schedules the exact date. |
Registration | NOT done through MyACT — your school or district coordinator handles registration |
Score use | Identical to national Saturday scores — colleges cannot distinguish school day from Saturday scores |
Strategy | If your school offers it: use it as your 'free' first attempt. Register for April or June Saturday as your paid backup with My Answer Key. |
My Answer Key | NOT available for school day test dates — this is the main limitation vs choosing October/April/June national dates |
Smart Strategy: Take the free school-day ACT as your first attempt. Use that score to assess your level. Then register for April (My Answer Key available) as your paid backup/improvement attempt. This gives you two full official ACT attempts — one free — before June retake if still needed.
17. ACT Test Information Release (My Answer Key) Dates
My Answer Key (formerly known as Test Information Release or TIR) is ACT's most powerful retake preparation resource. You receive a digital copy of your actual test questions, your answers, and the correct answers — for a fee of approximately $26.
Element | Details |
What it gives you | A digital copy of the multiple-choice test questions, your answer choices, and the correct answers for each question. Detailed section-by-section breakdown. |
Which test dates offer it | October 2025, April 2026, and June 2026 (national Saturday dates only; NOT available for all dates) |
Cost | ~$26 per request |
When available | Provided digitally in MyACT a few weeks after your score release |
How to use it | Review every wrong answer: Was it a content gap (you didn't know the concept) or a careless error (you knew but misread)? Content gaps = study that topic. Careless errors = timing and attention practice. |
Deadline to purchase | Up to 6 months after taking the test |
Writing TIR | Not included — Writing is scored separately and TIR is for multiple-choice only |
Strategy | If you plan to retake the ACT, always choose October, April, or June as your first attempt to access this resource. It is the single best preparation resource for a targeted retake. |

18. Frequently Asked Questions
How many ACT test dates are there in 2025–2026?
There are 7 national (US) ACT test dates in 2025–2026: September 13, October 25, December 13 (2025), and February 14, April 11, June 13, July 11 (2026). Internationally, 7 corresponding dates are offered, with tests administered across two days (Friday–Saturday). July has no test centres in New York.
What is the best ACT test date for a Grade 11 (Junior) student?
April 11, 2026 is the most recommended first attempt for juniors. By April, you have covered most of the high school curriculum tested on the ACT, and you still have June, July, September, and October available for retakes. February is a good choice if you want an early start with maximum retake options. My Answer Key is available for April — use it to study for a June or September retake if needed.
Can I change my ACT test date after registering?
Yes — use the Test Date Change option in your MyACT account (+$44). Your original base registration fee is credited toward the new date. You can also change your test centre (+$30–$40 depending on timing). You cannot simply cancel and get a refund — ACT fees are non-refundable. Never no-show: use the date change to preserve your fee value.
How long does it take to receive ACT scores?
Multiple-choice scores are typically released within 2–4 weeks after the test date. Online (Enhanced ACT) test-takers often receive MCQ scores within 2 business days. Writing scores (if applicable) take an additional 2 weeks after MCQ scores. Some students report seeing initial scores within 10 days; the official guidance is 2–4 weeks. Plan application timelines with at least 3 weeks buffer from test date to application deadline.
What is My Answer Key and which ACT dates offer it?
My Answer Key (formerly Test Information Release) provides a digital copy of your actual test questions, your answers, and the correct answers — for approximately $26. It is the most powerful retake preparation resource ACT offers. It is ONLY available for three national Saturday test dates per year: October, April, and June. It is NOT available for September, December, February, or July dates, or for school-day testing.
Is the ACT Science section required?
From September 2025 (Enhanced ACT) onwards, the Science section is optional — you choose whether to include it for an additional $4. However, virtually all US universities expect and use the Science section as part of your composite score, and STEM-focused universities specifically value it. Dropping Science to save $4 is almost never advisable. Add Science.
Can I take the ACT in India in 2026?
Yes. The ACT is available at authorised test centres in Indian cities including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune. International ACT tests run across two days (Friday–Saturday). The fee for Indian students is approximately $186.50–$221.50 (₹16,000–₹19,000). Register 6–8 weeks before your preferred date — metro city centres fill up 4–6 weeks before each test.
What ID should I bring to the ACT in India?
Bring your valid original passport — it is the universally accepted ID at all international ACT test centres. Some Indian centres accept school-issued photo ID. Aadhaar acceptance varies by centre — do not rely on it. Digital Aadhaar and photocopies are not accepted. Passport is the safest option. Also bring your printed admission ticket — phone display is not accepted.
Should I take the ACT or SAT?
Both are accepted equally by all US colleges. The best test is whichever one produces your higher score. Key differences: ACT tests Science (reasoning-based) and is more content-driven; SAT focuses more on critical thinking and data analysis. ACT is cheaper internationally than SAT ($186.50 vs $111 base+regional fee). The standard recommendation: take a full-length practice test for each and compare results. Your diagnostic score — not the test's reputation — should drive the decision.
19. EduShaale — ACT Coaching
EduShaale helps students across India plan their ACT date strategy, prepare with the right diagnostic-first approach, and connect their test results to strong university applications.
Date Strategy Planning: We map every student's ACT dates against their university application deadlines, CBSE/board exam calendar, and retake availability — building a 2–3 date plan before they register for the first time.
Diagnostic-First Preparation: Every student starts with a full-length timed ACT diagnostic. The section-by-section results determine preparation priorities — never guess, always target.
CBSE-to-ACT Alignment: CBSE students have a strong foundation in Mathematics that transfers directly to ACT Math and Science. We focus preparation on the English and Reading sections where CBSE background provides less direct support.
Science Section Strategy: The ACT Science section tests data interpretation and reasoning — NOT biology, chemistry, or physics facts. This is a learnable skill that responds quickly to targeted practice. We teach the passage-first, data-first reading approach that unlocks high Science scores efficiently.
My Answer Key Utilisation: For students retaking the ACT, we guide them through structured My Answer Key review — categorising every wrong answer by content gap vs careless error and building targeted study plans from the results.
India Test Centre Navigation: We help Indian students find authorised centres, manage the international registration process, prepare the correct payment methods, and avoid the common mistakes that delay or invalidate registrations.
