Introduction: The Exam Inside the Exam


Most students prepare for AP Chemistry's free-response section by studying chemistry harder. That is necessary, but it is not sufficient — and it is not where most of the section's lost points actually come from. The free-response section is scored against a published rubric that awards points for specific, independent, checkable actions: writing the correct expression, showing a substitution step, including a unit, stating a chemical principle explicitly. A student can understand the chemistry perfectly and still lose four or five points purely on how the answer was written.


This matters because the free-response section is worth exactly as much as the entire multiple-choice section — 50% of the composite score, from 46 raw points across 7 questions in 105 minutes. Unlike multiple choice, where a guess is either right or wrong, free response is built entirely around partial credit: a released instruction from College Board itself states plainly that for calculations, students must clearly show the method used and the steps involved — and, just as importantly, that any work done on scratch paper receives no credit at all. Only what is written in the actual free-response booklet is scored.

1. How AP Chemistry FRQs Are Actually Scored


Every AP Chemistry free-response question is graded against a published scoring guideline, written before the exam and applied identically by every trained reader. Each rubric point is tied to a specific, checkable criterion — and that criterion is scored on a binary basis: a response either fully satisfies it or it does not. There is no partial credit within a single criterion, but a single sub-part frequently bundles more than one criterion together.

A sub-part that says ‘identify the species and explain your reasoning’ is really two separate binary criteria bundled into one visible task: one point for the correct identification, one point for a reasoning statement that actually connects to it. A correct chemistry answer written in response to the wrong skill still loses the point. If a question asks you to justify why a boiling point is higher and you only calculate a numerical value, you have satisfied a mathematical-routines criterion that was never asked for and left the argumentation criterion — the one actually being scored — completely blank.


4. The Universal Point-Losers That Have Nothing to Do With Chemistry


The mistakes below appear across every unit and every question type, and every one of them costs points regardless of how well a student understands the underlying chemistry.


  • Doing real work on scratch paper: As covered in Section 2, only the free-response booklet is scored. Every calculation needs to appear there, fully, even if it looks messier than a scratch version.

  • Rounding too early in a multi-step calculation: Carrying a rounded intermediate value into a second or third calculation step compounds error and can shift a final answer outside the range the rubric accepts, even when the method was entirely correct.

  • Dropping or mishandling units: Unit conversions — grams to moles, millilitres to litres, Celsius to Kelvin — are graded as part of the method, and a missing or incorrect unit on a final answer is a specifically checkable rubric criterion, separate from the number itself.

  • Inconsistent significant figures: Reporting answers with the wrong number of significant figures is typically penalised once across the entire exam, not once per occurrence — but that single penalty is easy to trigger accidentally and just as easy to avoid by rounding consistently.

  • Leaving a sub-part blank: Because follow-through credit lets an incorrect earlier value still earn later points when used correctly, a blank sub-part guarantees zero points where a reasoned attempt might have earned most of them.

  • Writing a general chemistry fact instead of a specific explanation: A true statement that does not connect to the specific system in the question — the specific ions, the specific data, the specific conditions given — typically does not satisfy an argumentation criterion, even when the statement itself is chemically correct.


5. The Justification Pattern That Actually Earns Credit


Argumentation criteria — anything asking a student to justify, explain, or support a claim — consistently reward the same two-part structure: a stated chemical principle, followed by an explicit connection between that principle and the specific detail given in the question.

Example structure: ‘The boiling point of substance X is higher than substance Y because X has stronger London dispersion forces, which require more energy to overcome during the phase change.’

Notice the chain: observation, principle, and an explicit link back to the observation — not just the principle stated on its own.

✅  The fastest way to check your own justification before moving on

Read only the second half of your sentence — the part after ‘because.’ If it would still make sense attached to a completely different question on a completely different topic, it is too generic to satisfy an argumentation criterion. A strong justification is specific enough that it could not be copy-pasted into another question's answer.


6. A Worked Example, Scored Line by Line


The question below is an original example built in the same style and topic area as a typical long free-response question — a calorimetry-based enthalpy of dissolution problem — so the scoring pattern can be shown transparently without reproducing any actual released exam question.

📝  Sample question (10 points)

A student dissolves 5.00 g of MgCl2(s) in 100.0 g of water inside a coffee-cup calorimeter. The temperature rises from 22.0 degrees C to 34.5 degrees C. Assume the resulting solution has a specific heat capacity of 4.18 J/(g x degrees C) and a total mass equal to the combined mass of solute and water. (a) Calculate q, the heat released by the dissolution process, in joules. (b) Calculate the molar enthalpy of dissolution, delta-H-soln, in kJ/mol. (c) The calorimeter is not perfectly insulated. Explain whether this would cause the experimentally determined magnitude of delta-H-soln to be reported as higher or lower than the true value.

(a) q = 5230 J. (b) delta-H-soln = -98 kJ/mol. (c) The measured value would be different because heat is lost to the surroundings.


A Strong Answer (Full Method Shown, Every Criterion Addressed)

(a) Total solution mass = 5.00 g + 100.0 g = 105.0 g. q = mc(delta-T) = (105.0 g)(4.18 J/(g x degrees C))(34.5 - 22.0 degrees C) = (105.0)(4.18)(12.5) = 5486 J. Since the solution warmed up, the dissolution released this heat, so q(dissolution) = -5486 J (exothermic).

(b) Moles of MgCl2 = 5.00 g / 95.21 g/mol = 0.0525 mol. delta-H-soln = q / n = -5486 J / 0.0525 mol = -104,495 J/mol = -104.5 kJ/mol.

(c) A calorimeter that is not perfectly insulated allows some heat to escape to the surroundings rather than being fully captured by the solution's temperature change. Because less heat is measured than was actually released, the calculated magnitude of delta-H-soln would be reported as lower (smaller in magnitude) than the true value.

Both answers reached almost the same final numbers. The ten-point gap came entirely from omitted method, missing signs, and a justification that named the existence of an error without explaining its direction or mechanism — exactly the structural, non-chemistry mistakes covered in Section 4.

❌  Myth 1: "If my final numerical answer is correct, I earn full credit for that question."

Truth: Each rubric point is tied to a specific, independent criterion — method, substitution, units, and a correct final answer are frequently scored as separate points. A correct final answer with no shown method can earn only the single point tied to that final value, not the points tied to demonstrating the process.

College Board publishes three documents for every past AP Chemistry exam administration, all freely available on AP Central: the released free-response questions themselves, the official scoring guidelines showing exactly how points were allocated for that specific exam, and a Chief Reader Report — a written summary from the exam's head scorer describing the most common mistakes actual student responses made that year, question by question.

💡  Why the Chief Reader Report is worth more than another practice set

Practice questions tell you what might be asked. A Chief Reader Report tells you exactly how real students — tens of thousands of them — lost points on that specific question, described by the person who oversaw every reader scoring it. It is the closest thing available to a debrief from inside the actual grading process, and it is free.

A practical way to use all three documents together: attempt a released FRQ set under real timed conditions first, without looking at the scoring guideline. Score your own response against the official guideline afterward, awarding a point only when your answer fully satisfies its exact wording. Then read the Chief Reader Report for that year to see whether your own mistakes match the most commonly reported ones — if they do, that mistake is worth fixing before anything else, since it is demonstrably a pattern rather than a one-off slip.
