Introduction


Every year, AP Physics 2 posts a higher pass rate than AP Physics 1. In 2025, it was 72.6% against 67.3%. In 2024, before AP Physics 1's redesign narrowed the gap, it was 70.5% against 47.3% -- a 23-point difference. Students find this comparison online, conclude AP Physics 2 must be the easier exam, and plan their course sequence accordingly. That conclusion is wrong, and the reason it is wrong has nothing to do with either exam's content.


AP Physics 2 is not taken by a random sample of students. It is taken almost exclusively by students who already sat AP Physics 1, mostly a year earlier, and chose to continue. Every student who found Physics 1 overwhelming and decided not to pursue further physics has already been filtered out of the Physics 2 population before a single Physics 2 exam is administered. Comparing the two pass rates directly is not comparing two exams -- it is comparing a broad, unfiltered population against a narrower, self-selected one.


This guide works through the actual data behind that claim: the score distributions for both exams going back to 2015, the population sizes that reveal exactly how filtered the Physics 2 cohort is, the specific content differences between the two courses, and the physics-education research on why electricity and magnetism is cognitively harder to learn than mechanics regardless of what the pass rate says. It ends with the fairer question worth asking instead of 'which one is easier': which one is harder for you, specifically, given where you are starting from.


1. The Numbers, Stated Plainly


Before examining why the comparison is misleading, the comparison itself deserves an honest look. Using College Board's official score distributions, AP Physics 2 has out-performed AP Physics 1 on every headline metric, every year, for as long as both exams have existed in their current form.

Two things stand out. First, AP Physics 2 has led on every metric in every year shown -- this is not noise. Second, the gap narrowed sharply in 2025, when AP Physics 1's own redesign (shorter exam, fewer free-response questions, more time per question) closed roughly 18 of the 23 points that separated the two exams in 2024. Even after that redesign, AP Physics 2 still leads by 5.3 points on pass rate and 2.0 points on five-rate. The gap shrank because AP Physics 1 changed. It did not disappear, and it has not reversed in eleven years of data.

What this section does not tell you:  A pass-rate gap tells you how two populations of test-takers performed. It does not, by itself, tell you how the same individual student would perform on each exam, or which exam demands more from a given student's understanding. Section 3 explains why that distinction matters.


2. Why “AP Physics 2 Easier Than AP Physics 1” Is the Wrong Conclusion


The claim that AP Physics 2 is easier than AP Physics 1 treats the pass-rate gap as if it were measuring the exams. It is not. It is measuring two different populations of students who happen to have sat two different exams.


Consider what it actually takes to appear in the AP Physics 2 data at all. A student has to have taken AP Physics 1 (or, far less commonly, an equivalent course), decided the subject was worth continuing, enrolled in a second physics course, and stayed with it through to exam day. A student appears in the AP Physics 1 data simply by enrolling in a first physics course -- often as a 10th or 11th grader exploring whether STEM is a direction they want to pursue at all, with no prior signal of physics aptitude or commitment required.


This is the core reason the claim “AP Physics 2 easier than AP Physics 1” is the wrong way to phrase the comparison. The two exams are not being sat by comparable groups. One measures a broad population encountering physics reasoning for the first time. The other measures a narrower population that has already cleared that bar once and chose to come back for more -- and that difference in who shows up explains most of the score gap before a single question of content difficulty enters the picture.


A thought experiment that makes the filter visible


Imagine, hypothetically, that every student who sat AP Physics 1 in 2025 was required to sit AP Physics 2 the following year -- including the roughly 33% who scored a 1 or 2, and including students who decided after Physics 1 that physics was not a subject they wanted to continue. Nothing suggests that population would post a 72.6% pass rate on Physics 2's electricity, magnetism, and modern physics content. The actual 2025 Physics 2 cohort of 24,211 students is a small, filtered fraction of the 174,401 who took Physics 1 -- and that filtering, not friendlier content, is the most defensible explanation for the higher score.


3. The Population Gap: Who Actually Sits Each Exam


The clearest evidence for self-selection is not a survey or an opinion -- it is the raw test-taker count, published by College Board every year alongside the score distributions.

Roughly seven to eight times as many students sit AP Physics 1 as sit AP Physics 2, and that ratio has held steady for at least four consecutive years. This is not a temporary artefact of any single exam's redesign -- it is a structural feature of how the two courses are used. AP Physics 1 functions as an entry point: many students take it to find out whether they enjoy physics, whether they are considering a STEM major, or simply because it is the most rigorous science option their school offers. AP Physics 2 functions as a continuation: school course catalogues and AP Course Audit filings for AP Physics 2 commonly list AP Physics 1 as an explicit prerequisite, and the College Board's own course description recommends students have already completed Physics 1 or an equivalent course before enrolling.


The grade-level pattern reinforces the filter


AP Physics 1 is most commonly recommended for and taken in 11th grade, once a student has completed geometry and is at least concurrently enrolled in Algebra 2. AP Physics 2, where offered as a follow-on course, is most commonly taken in 12th grade by students continuing from Physics 1 the year before. That one-year gap matters for reasons that have nothing to do with content: a 12th grader sitting their second or third AP science exam has a year more general academic maturity, a year more experience with AP-style free-response writing, and direct prior experience with exactly the kind of reasoning College Board rewards on physics FRQs. None of that shows up in a raw pass-rate comparison, and all of it inflates Physics 2's numbers relative to Physics 1's.

The mechanism in one sentence:  AP Physics 2's population is not a random draw of students -- it is the subset of the AP Physics 1 population that already succeeded once, chose to continue, and gained a year of exam experience in the process. A higher pass rate is exactly what that filtering predicts, independent of how the two courses' content compares.

4. Same Mathematics, Four Different Subjects


AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 use identical mathematics -- algebra and trigonometry, no calculus -- and an identical exam format: 40 multiple-choice questions in 80 minutes and 4 free-response questions in 100 minutes, each section worth half the score. The mathematics being equal is exactly why the content comparison matters: whatever difficulty gap exists between the two courses has to come from the physics itself, not from a harder branch of mathematics.

AP Physics 1 spends eight units building a single coherent picture of mechanics: how things move, why they move that way, and what happens when they collide, rotate, or displace fluid. AP Physics 2 spends seven units moving through four largely unrelated subject areas -- heat and gases, electric and magnetic fields, lenses and wave interference, and the quantum behaviour of atoms and nuclei. A student who masters Newton's second law in Unit 2 of Physics 1 is using that same reasoning framework in Units 3 through 8. A student who masters Coulomb's law in Physics 2's electricity unit gets comparatively little transfer benefit when the course moves on to thermodynamics or optics, because the underlying physical models do not overlap the way mechanics topics do.


This is the content-side argument for why a raw pass-rate comparison flatters Physics 2: breadth across four disconnected domains is a different kind of difficulty than depth within one connected domain, and it is not obviously the lesser challenge -- even though the score data, filtered by self-selection, makes it look that way.

 


5. Why Electricity and Magnetism Feels Harder, Even When the Scores Disagree


Electric Force, Field, and Potential; Electric Circuits; and Magnetism and Electromagnetism together account for roughly 42%-48% of AP Physics 2's multiple-choice section -- close to half the exam. This is where the content-difficulty argument is strongest, and it is not just a matter of opinion among students who found it hard.


Physics education research consistently identifies electricity and magnetism as harder to learn than mechanics, and gives a specific, non-circular reason why: mechanics deals with objects, forces, and motion that students can directly see, feel, and predict from ordinary experience, while electric and magnetic fields, charge, and current are invisible and have to be reasoned about entirely through abstract representations. Published physics-education studies on student difficulties with electromagnetism describe this directly -- students find the material challenging in large part because they lack the concrete, everyday experience with the phenomena that makes mechanics comparatively intuitive, and instructors independently report that E&M is harder to teach for the same reason.


This gives AP Physics 2 a genuine, defensible difficulty argument that has nothing to do with pass rates: roughly half its exam tests a domain that the research literature identifies as intrinsically harder to build intuition for, using representations (field lines, potential surfaces, flux) that mechanics never requires. A student can score well on Physics 2's electricity and magnetism content, but the research suggests it typically takes more deliberate practice with abstract representations to get there than the equivalent mechanics content in Physics 1 does.

Key insight:  The best-supported version of “is AP Physics 2 harder” is not about pass rates at all. It is that roughly half of AP Physics 2 tests content that physics-education research identifies as cognitively harder to build intuition for than mechanics -- independent of who is sitting the exam or how well they eventually score.


6. This Pattern Is Not Unique to Physics


Self-selection inflating pass rates relative to perceived difficulty is a recognised pattern across the AP programme, not a quirk specific to Physics 1 and 2. Three other well-known examples make the same point from different angles.

The pattern they illustrate, however, is well established: whenever an AP exam is disproportionately taken by students who chose it after already proving themselves in a related course, its pass rate rises for reasons that have little to do with the exam being easier for a first-time student.


7. So Which One Is Actually Harder? A Fairer Comparison


College Board does not publish a dataset of students who sat both AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2, scored on a controlled, apples-to-apples basis -- so no source, including this one, can give a precise, data-backed answer to which exam is harder for a fixed population. What the evidence in this guide supports is a more honest, appropriately qualified answer than the pass-rate comparison offers.


For the population that actually takes each exam, AP Physics 2 is statistically easier to pass -- the data in Section 1 is real and consistent across eleven years. For an individual student deciding whether to continue from Physics 1 into Physics 2, the honest expectation is different: you are trading a single, connected content domain you have already built intuition for across a full year, for four largely disconnected domains, roughly half of which -- electricity and magnetism -- physics-education research identifies as intrinsically less intuitive than the mechanics you just finished. Your odds of passing may be somewhat better than they were on Physics 1, because you are a year more experienced and already proved you can handle AP-level physics reasoning. Your odds of finding the material itself effortless are not.

 

8. What This Means for Your Own Decision


If you are choosing whether to continue from Physics 1 into Physics 2


Do not use the pass-rate gap as a reason to expect an easier year. Use it as reassurance that students who succeeded in Physics 1 -- which you have, if you are asking this question after finishing the course -- consistently go on to succeed in Physics 2 at a high rate. That is a statement about students like you, not about the content being lighter.

Ask how many students who took Physics 1 continued to Physics 2, not just what the Physics 2 pass rate was.


9. Myths About AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 Difficulty


Four beliefs recur often enough, in course-selection discussions, to address directly.

Myth:  "AP Physics 2's higher pass rate proves it has easier content."

Reality:  The pass-rate gap is real, but it reflects a smaller, self-selected population -- 7 to 8 times fewer students than sit AP Physics 1 -- not a lighter syllabus. Roughly half of AP Physics 2 tests electricity and magnetism, content that physics-education research identifies as intrinsically harder to build intuition for than mechanics.

What to do:  Prepare for AP Physics 2 with the same intensity you gave Physics 1 -- do not treat the pass-rate gap as permission to under-prepare.

Myth:  "If I struggled with AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2 will be worse."

Reality:  Not necessarily. Physics 2 tests almost entirely different content from Physics 1, so specific struggles with, say, rotational dynamics or momentum do not automatically carry over. A student who struggled with Physics 1's heavy FRQ justification demands may find Physics 2's more calculation-and-concept-blended FRQ style a better fit.

What to do:  Diagnose what specifically was hard about Physics 1 -- the content, the FRQ writing style, or the pace -- before assuming Physics 2 will repeat the same difficulty.

Myth:  "Comparing AP exam pass rates is a reliable way to judge difficulty."

Reality:  Pass rates are shaped as much by who takes an exam as by how hard its content is. AP Calculus BC, AP Spanish Language, and AP Physics C all show elevated pass rates driven substantially by self-selected, already-prepared cohorts rather than lenient content.

What to do:  When comparing AP exams, look at test-taker counts and typical prerequisites alongside the pass rate, not the pass rate in isolation.

Myth:  "AP Physics 2 is basically Physics 1 with new formulas."

Reality:  AP Physics 2 covers thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics, and modern physics -- four content domains that share little conceptual overlap with Physics 1's mechanics focus, and that do not build on each other the way Physics 1's eight mechanics-adjacent units do.

What to do:  Budget separate preparation time for each of Physics 2's four domains rather than assuming skills from Physics 1 transfer directly.
